Career & Opportunities

What jobs can I get with a B.Ed.?

Early childhood educators are professionals who work in schools or child care centers to promote the development of young children. With a career in early childhood education, you can contribute to the success of young children by providing a strong foundation in literacy, math, and social skills. In addition to teaching students these skills, you provide for the physical needs of children while offering a caring and empathetic classroom environment.

This B.Ed. ECE can prepare you to be a:

  • Daycare Teacher: A daycare teacher supervises a group of young children in a home or daycare facility. You will typically be required to set a schedule for the class and facilitate educational activities, such as reading, circle time, or instructional games. In addition, effective communication with the children’s parents regarding their child’s learning development is another important aspect of being a daycare teacher.
  • Preschool Teacher's Assistant: A preschool teacher's assistant works closely with, and under the supervision of a licensed teacher. Assistants tend to provide support in monitoring and looking after the children's daily needs, which can range from preparation and clean-up activities, and supporting children who need extra help in completing a range of tasks. Assistants also provide the extra help necessary during group activities.
  • Preschool Teacher: Teaching preschool-aged children mostly covers basic motor, language, and social skills. As a preschool teacher, you may also have to introduce some mathematical, literacy, or geography subject matter in the classroom, though most of your teaching will probably involve establishing structure, developing creativity, and exploring students' interests.
  • Kindergarten Teacher: Kindergarten teachers instruct children on foundational, academic and social skills, evaluate their performance, and jointly work with other teachers and school administrators. Kindergarten teachers typically enter their positions with a bachelor's degree, but in some states will be expected to earn their master's degree within a specific phase of time.
  • Elementary School Teacher: In most states, earning a bachelor's degree and obtaining state certification in early childhood education qualifies you to teach children at the preschool level up to the second or third grade. As an elementary school teacher, you'll typically teach a class of students in all academic areas, including reading and math. You'll assess each student's progress, and frequently talk with parents regarding student success. It should be noted, though, that in some states, you'll need to earn your master's degree within a certain period after beginning your job.
  • Preschool Director: Teaching isn't the only job you can consider. As the director of a preschool, you'd be responsible for ensuring programs offered are academically and socially appropriate. You'd also need to manage the hiring and training of teachers employed by the program. Preschool directors must frequently communicate with parents about student and school performance.
